The Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed concern over acts of sabotage by certain individuals within the union and its chapels, which marred the image of the union during the inaugural ‘Dialogue with Journalists’ event.
The event, held last Tuesday, hosted Senator Gbenga Daniel, representing Ogun East, and aimed to provide a platform for elected federal lawmakers from the state to account for their stewardship over the past year.
During the program, it was discovered that some members of the union failed to perform their official duties, instead fabricating false stories to tarnish the union’s image and claiming undeserved funds.
In a communique issued at the end of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Council June Congress, held on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at the Olusegun Osoba Press Center, Iwe Iroyin, Oke Ilewo, Abeokuta, the Congress resolved to strictly adhere to the constitutional provisions of the Union regarding membership status.
The Congress was presided over by the Chairman of the Council, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju, with members from various chapels, including executive members of the council, in attendance. They deliberated on issues affecting the Union, Ogun State, and the Federal Government of Nigeria.
This measure is intended to strengthen efforts to weed out unqualified and untrained individuals, as well as ‘touts’ from the Union.
The Congress, in its resolution, emphasized the need to differentiate genuine members from impostors, ensuring compliance with the required number of members to form a chapel. The Congress also referred affected members to its disciplinary committee for proper sanctions.
The Congress called on the Credentials and Accreditation Committee to submit its final report and compendium promptly for onward transmission to the National Secretariat of the Union in Abuja.
During the Congress, the Ogun State NUJ congratulated the Oyo State Council for successfully hosting the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the Union in Ibadan.
They also congratulated the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, on his election as Chairman of the Southern Governors Forum (SGF), urging him to use his new position to promote peaceful coexistence in the region.
