The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Council, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju has hailed Journalists in the state saying they deserve the support of all.
This is in commemoration of the World Press Freedom Day celebration, as declared by UNESCO ON 3RD May every year.
Comrade Wale Olanrewaju said Journalists in all over the world and Nigeria has been agents of change bearing in mind the various contributions and sacrifices they make on a daily basis to ensure the emancipation and liberation of the common man who had needlessly suffered deprivations, discrimination and other forms of human rights violations in the society.
Comrade Olanrewaju therefore used the medium to call on the society to see them as partners in progress and accord them the necessary respect as they shape the society through what they do and contribute to the development of the nation always.
He reiterated further that any attempt to prevent performance of their duties amounts to a breach of the constitution and a violation of press freedom.
The day is to remind journalists of their obligation to professional ethics in the course of their duties. Journalists should therefore not be discouraged by the hazard of the profession or outright opposition against them in the line of their duty but to always defend their right always, Olanrewaju said adding that the day is also to ensure that civic space is not restricted considering the contribution of freedom of expression to development of our democracies all over the world and Nigeria in particular.
