This is 52 BC. Four hundred years after the founding of the Republic, Rome is the richest city in the world, the capital of a million people and the center of a growing empire. The Republic was founded on the principles of collective power and fierce personal competition, never allowing one individual to assume complete control.

Gaius Julius Caesar (Ciarn Hinds, Munich) completes a long campaign to conquer Gaul. In the process of conquest, he became rich and perfected a dangerous army led by the Thirteenth Army, a group of people ready to follow his every command. The two participants in the thirteenth battle, Lucius Vorenus (Kevin McKidd, Kingdom of Heaven) and Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson, King Arthur), are the main characters of the show.

Vorenus is a loyal soldier and family man. He is respected by the people and Caesar himself. Pullo is a womanizer, a heavily drunken soldier. His strong fighting skills and series of rebellions also made him famous. A rocky relationship between Vorenus and Pullo begins when circumstances force them to cooperate on a mission of great importance to Caesar.

In Rome, Caesar’s niece Attia (Polly Walker, Sliver) is an ambitious and cunning player in honor of the Romans. With Caesar’s mistress Servila, we have two women who rival any man in the empire in cunning and cruelty. Attia’s son (and future Emperor of Rome) Octavian (Max Pirkis, Lord and Commander: The Far End of the World) is a shrewd, precocious youth with a deep understanding of Roman politics.

Caesar’s main rivals are Brutus (Tobias Menzies, “Meanness”) and Pompey Magnus (Kenneth Cranham, “Layer Pie”). Pompey was co-consul of Rome along with Caesar. The war between Caesar and Pompey was originally a battle of will and reason. Finally it comes to the sword. Brutus’ relationship with Caesar is more complex. Caesar needs Brutus and his powerful family to legitimize his rule, but Brutus is a Republican who resents Caesar’s imperial ambitions. Relations betweenfather and son are a source of great internal conflict for both.

The usurpation of power by Caesar and its consequences for Rome is the basis on which all conflicts between the parties take place. Politics, personal rivalries, friendships and rare oedipal relationships are expertly combined with historical facts to tell the unique story of Rome during one of its most eventful periods. Rest assured, I’ve only scratched the surface here. There are many characters and discussions in this vast story, which I leave to the viewer to discover.
